SPORTSMAN 38:
CONSTRUCTION UPDATES ON THE SPORTSMAN 38, START TO FINISH:
- 04/01/19 -Fairing the hull interior and applying interior gel coat.
- 03/18/19 - Hull came out of the mold.
- 03/11/19 Stringers & bulkheads installed. The black area you see on the bulkhead is high density foam for screwing and bolting in fixtures.
- 03/08/19 -Hull infusion complete!
- 03/01/19 -Resin is channeled out through the tubing into the layers of fiberglass and core-cell. This is what we call INFUSION!!!
- 2/25/19 - Vaccum bag is applied and the pump pulls all of the air out. More tubing and t-fittings are installed on the outside of the bag.
- 02/22/19 - Our bathtub transformed into a yellow submarine.
- Yellow compaflex material is applied and acts as a flow media for infusion. Resin flow tubing is also installed.
- 02/20/19 - Matte skin coat over gelcoat.
- 02/15/19 -Fit Core-Cell in hull and started building the superstructure mold.
- 02/10/19 -Vacuum infusion of bulkheads and stringers.
- 02/05/19 - Our sleek gray Dolphin looks like a giant bathtub now.
- The inside of hte mold was sprayed with a blowcoat-gelcoat, this gives us a surface to walk on so we can make our fiberglass and core-cell patterns. Once that's complete, we then blow the gelcoat out of the mold, which helps us detect and repair any areas that may not release.
- 01/11/19 - Our spotted cow turns into a sleek gray Dolphin.
- We sprayed the inside of the mold with Duratch Primer, then sand it out to make a smooth surface.
- 01/08/19 - At this point she looks like a spotted cow, so we call her Betsey.
- The mold is fiberglassed on the inside with 6 ounch cloth and resin. The pink stuff you see in the photos is fairing compound.
- 11/16/18 - Mold construction is almost completed
- 11/07/18 - Whats really inside the layers of the hull? Also known as, a composite sandwich?
- Layers of E-glass based laminates
- Core-Cell M100 impact resistant structural foam
- E-glass based laminates for strenght & stiffness
- All materials are joined with Urethane Acrylate Resin (vacuum infusion)
- Completed "composite sandwich" - a light weight, but robust hull; made with modern materials & processing techniques
