“Five Stars” gets a new owner and heads north

Our 2001 44′ Atlantic recently obtained a new owner, Mike Doble. Purchased here in Jacksonville, Mike and his crew have taken the new purchase north where she’ll now reside in Lake Huron in East Tawas, Michigan. Mike was originally in the US Navy where he developed a love for the water.

Mike and his crew have maintained a blog over the last few weeks of their journey from Jacksonville to Michigan. “I am very fortunate to be taking this journey. Even more so to have close friends and family join me in making this memorable trip.” We’re happy to announce that they’ve arrived to their destination this morning.

Huckins recently sold the 58′ Huckins Offshore 1973, “BFB”. We received a lovely message from the new owner, William Guy.

“I have driven quite a few boats in my time and I must say, nothing compares to a Huckins. Especially ours! It handles like a Corvette and catches as many looks as well. The throttle response, steering, and ride are special. I had no desire to give up the wheel even after 5 hours.”

Huckins Partners with Safe Harbor Maritime Academy

A group of teenage boys are taking pointers as the Huckins team works on stripping and varnishing the Amazing Grace’s toe rail. The 115-foot yacht, Amazing Grace, was privately donated several years ago to Safe Harbor Maritime Academy, an organization that provides a nurturing learning environment to help teenage boys find balance and harmony in their lives. Founded in Jacksonville, FL in 1984, Safe Harbor Maritime Academy serves as an educational facility for boys age 14-17 and provides a safe, stable, structured, alternative home environment with hands-on seamanship training.

Huckins was honored to work on the Amazing Grace and continues to mentor Safe Harbor Maritime Academy students by teaching them the proper way to strip, sand and varnish. “This is a rewarding experience for everyone involved,” stated Cindy Purcell, third generation owner of Huckins Yacht Corporation.

Safe Harbor has been making headlines and was featured on CBS This Morning, NBC Today Show, CNN, CBN and in People Magazine. The fame continues as Safe Harbor is now a made-for-TV movie occasionally featured on the Hallmark Channel. Mystic Seaport Antique and Classic Boat Rendezvous

Magnificent antique boats will sail into Mystic Seaport, a picturesque New England town. This is a place where Hollywood producers, documentarians, photographers and more have captured the quaint town’s magic. It’s a place where a working shipyard, historic tall ships and buildings, plus a waterfront village fill the landscape, and it begs boaters to stop and admire the scenery.

This summer, along the Mystic River, Mystic Seaport: The Museum of America and The Sea is hosting it’s 37th annual Mystic Seaport Antique and Classic Boat Rendezvous on July 28-29, 2012. This two-day event will host a variety of activities, attract lovingly restored yachts, and also pay a special tribute to Huckins Yachts. The tribute will speak to Huckins long-term commitment in restoration and maintenance of antique and classic yachts, since 1928.

The event kicks off Saturday at 9 a.m. and visitors are invited to admire an array of restored antique vessels dating back to 1965 while they are being judged for an award competition recognizing excellence in restoration, authenticity and workmanship. After Saturday winds down, Sunday is sure to wake things up with a three-mile parade down the historic Mystic River beginning at 12:30 p.m.

Florida Times-Union Recounts the Grandfather of Huckins

The Florida Times-Union reporter, Matt Soergel, has written an excellent story on the founder of Huckins Yacht Corporation, Frank Pembroke Huckins. Huckins was known for his wit and humor and was never afraid to voice his opinion. Matt Soergel captures quotes from Huckins’ memoirs, “Boats and Women: The History of My Life”, and takes you through his life nearly seventy years ago.

The Florida Times-Union is a major daily newspaper in Jacksonville, Florida and is recognized as the oldest newspaper in the state.
